The 2024 Baltic Sea Rally Championship kicked off with the Sarma Rally during the second weekend of February, signaling the commencement of the 2024 season. This inaugural event was hosted by one of Latvia's oldest regularly held rallies – the traditional winter Rally Sarma. 46 rally crews from eight countries entered the Baltic Sea Championship. Latvia's triumph in the national cup standings was no surprise, given that this rally concurrently served as a stage in the Latvian Rally Championship.

Gulbenes novadā 10. februārī noslēdzās tradicionālais ziemas rallijs Sarma 2024, kas tika aizvadīts patiesi ziemīgos apstākļos. Arī šogad uzvaru rallija kopvērtējumā izcīnīja citas valsts pārstāvis – igaunis Egons Kaurs. Tādējādi jau četrpadsmit gadus latviešu sportisti nav spējuši sev paturēt šī iemīļotā ziemas rallija galveno uzvaru.

Athletes praise the special stages at the opening of the Rally Sarma 2024

On the evening of Friday, February 9, the traditional winter Rally Sarma 2024 was solemnly opened. Fifty-eight crews from eight countries will participate in the competition, which will take place on February 10. The athletes will have to perform three special stages twice, which will total more than ninety kilometers. Entry list for the Rally Sarma 2024 promises another exciting competition.

This weekend, on February 10th, the battle among Latvian rally crews against neighboring country athletes for victory in the overall standings of the Rally Sarma will continue in the Gulbene region. Since Ivars Vasaraudzis victory in 2010, no Latvian rally crew has been able to achieve this. Although initially it seemed that this would be the year when it could happen, Rally Sarma 2024 got the opportunity to kick off the 2024 season of the new Baltic Sea Rally Championship. Consequently, participants not from the Latvian Rally Championship also entered the rally, adding complexity to the competition for Latvians in their home rally.

The traditional winter rally Sarma becomes part of the Baltic Sea Rally Championship for the first time in its illustrious forty-nine-year history. The action kicks off on the icy roads of Gulbene region on February 10, marking the opening event of this championship. Simultaneously, Rally Sarma 2024 serves as the second leg of the Latvian Rally Championship and the Latvian Historic Rally Cup, as well as the second event of the season for participants of the Latvian Rallysprint Cup.
